"Now, who is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?" King David, 1 Chronicles 29:5 (NIV)
We are looking for a few good people.
People who have:
· good hearts;
· good hands, and
· want to see them used for the Lord Jesus Christ in the Living Faith Church Worship Ministry.
Are YOU one of them?
Check out our criteria and find out. Do you want to play -
Piano?
1) Chords and Harmony: you should be able to:
· play in the keys of A, Bb, C, D, E, F and G major,
· use the common major, minor, dominant 7th and minor 7th chords. Being able to use sus4 chords and pedal points is a powerful plus.
We will be using chord charts, not standard music notation, so if you wish to serve in this way you have to be prepared to work from chord charts.
2) Rhythm: you need to be able to
· provide a stable rhythm for playing solo,
· strip it down when playing with a worship band,
· bring up or down the intensity of the worship songs through your rhythms, depending on what the worship leader needs at that particular moment.
3) Free worship and ministry time: you need to be able to play simple chord progressions to support free worship, altar calls and ministry time, such as the I-IV, IV-V and vi-IV progressions
Guitar?
1) Chords and Harmony: You need to be able to
· play in the keys of A, C, D, E, and G
· know how to use a capo to transpose your guitar to play in the keys of Bb and F major.
2) Rhythm: You should be able to
· play a fast-paced groove,
· a heavier rock-style rhythm, and
· strum in a way suitable for the slower songs
3) Free worship and ministry time: you need to be able to play simple chord progressions to support free worship, altar calls and ministry time, such as the I-IV, IV-V and vi-IV progressions
Electric Guitar?
To use the electric guitar effectively in worship, you need to know everything that's needed for acoustic guitar. You also need to know what difference the sound of the electric guitar makes to the overall sound of the band and how that affects the worship.
Bass?
1) Chords and Harmony: play in the keys of A, Bb, C, D, E, F and G major,
2) Rhythm: You have to know how to use the bass to bring up and down the intensity of the song, as well as choose bass parts that enhance the singing.
3) Free worship and ministry time: As before, you just need the I-IV, IV-V and vi-IV progressions and you'll do fine.
Drums?
What do you need to be able to play drums for worship? You need:
· a good, solid sense of rhythm,
· to be able to get a good solid sound from the drum kit.
· to be able to do basic grooves on the kick that fit in with the bass (and the rest of the congregation).
· to know how to use cross-stick, hi-hat and ride cymbals to bring up or down the intensity of the songs
All these criteria may look easy to fulfill. They are. Playing music for worship isn't demanding, if you understand clearly what your role is. You are there to support, not perform, to edify, not entertain. Worship music is a special genre, because your purpose is to bring the congregation to participate in worship, so EVERYTHING you play MUST take the congregation into account.
And also remember that the attention should NEVER be on you, if you are doing things correctly. It should be either on the singing, the worship leaders when they exhort the congregation or what the pastor is speaking.
